My name is Selina Espinoza (she/her/ella) and I am a dedicated fourth-year health psychology PhD student with a strong interest in understanding how cultural factors influence substance use (e.g., nicotine and cannabis) and health outcomes in vulnerable populations. With a Master's in Psychological Sciences specializing in Health Psychology from UC Merced and a Bachelor's in Psychology with a minor in Statistics from CSU Monterey Bay, my current work focuses on exploring the intersection of culture and substance-related behaviors, utilizing novel theoretical frameworks in health psychology.

Throughout my academic career, I have been actively involved in several research projects, including studying cannabis use and perceptions among Mexican American young adults and college students, as well as examining the therapeutic benefits of cannabis among veterans with PTSD in Boulder, Colorado. My work has led me to present at national symposia, secure second place in a California State University research competition, and publish in peer-reviewed journals. Additionally, I have been honored with numerous awards and scholarships, including the CSU Sally Casanova Scholar, CSU Monterey Bay UROC Scholar, McNair Scholar, and Stanford Phoenix Scholar. Through this work, I aim to contribute to the development of culturally informed interventions that better serve communities in need, and to inspire underrepresented groups from low-income, single-parent households, like my own. In addition to my research, I am passionate about mentoring and advocating for the next generation of scholars. I have had the opportunity to mentor undergraduate students through roles as a supplemental instruction leader (psychology tutor), teaching assistant, and graduate student research mentor. I am committed to helping undergraduates navigate their research journey and prepare for graduate school. My work is driven by a commitment to advancing public health initiatives and supporting underserved communities through research and education.
